Casting call Saturday for independent film

An independent film production company will conduct auditions from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lyric Theatre in Tupelo.

The film company is scouting locations in north Mississippi for a movie scheduled to begin filming in the spring.

The casting call is open to adults between the ages of 25 and 70 as well as young boys ages 3 to 4.

Two more qualify

for City Council

Two more candidates qualified Thursday for this spring's elections for Tupelo City Council, including one newcomer and one incumbent.

Larry Cole, a Tupelo contractor, will seek the Ward 5 seat currently held by Democratic Councilman Tommy Doty. Cole, a Republican, could not be immediately reached for comment.

Qualifying for re-election was Ward 7 Councilman Danny Barrows, a Republican. Barrows, 48, owner of Barrows Construction Co., has held the Ward 7 seat since the city converted to a Mayor-City Council form of government in 1993.

Party primaries are scheduled for May 1 while the general election is set for June 5.

Subway restaurant reports embezzlement

Subway of South Gloster Street reported on Wednesday the embezzlement of more than $11,000.

According to a police report, $11,121 was reported missing by the store's owner after he discovered several bank deposits were missing.

No charges have yet been filed in the case.

Tupelo police investigators did not return phone calls.

Area boy dead after falling through ice

A 10-year-old Lee County boy died at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis Thursday morning after suffering from hypothermia.

C. J. Southworth of 208 County Road 325 fell through the ice into a pond behind his home on New Year's Day. An older brother jumped in to get Southworth out of the water, said Sgt. Jim Johnson of the Lee County Sheriff's Office, but he was unresponsive when rescue workers arrived at the scene.

Southworth was flown to the North Mississippi Medical Center, and later airlifted to Le Bonheur. The incident was ruled an accident.
