W. Tenn. losing 901 area code
Beginning Monday, the telephone area code for most of western Tennessee will change from 901 to 731 and will affect some Northeast Mississippi phone customers.
The Memphis metropolitan area, including Shelby, Tipton and Fayette counties will continue to use the 901 area code, according to BellSouth. But customers in the following Tennessee counties will see their area code change to 731 beginning Monday: Lauderdale, Haywood, Hardeman, McNairy, Hardin, Decatur, Chester, Madison, Henderson, Crockett, Gibson, Dyer, Carroll, Benton, Henry, Weakley, Obion and Lake.
Customers in the extreme northeastern part of Mississippi who have local call access to parts of Tennessee will continue to have that local access. But calls outside those local calling areas will be required to use the new 731 area code.
The new area code was necessitated by growth in the number of phone numbers in the area to accommodate cell phones, computers, fax machines and other communications devices.
Customers are urged to start using the new area code Monday but the change will not become permanent until Sept. 21. However, BellSouth recommends customers begin now to reprogram equipment that relies on preprogrammed numbers such as speed dialing options.
