WATER VALLEY - Bertha Newcomb Hix, 65, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003. She was born Aug. 7, 1938, in Lunenburg County, Va., to the late Willie and Betsy Newcomb. She was a member of Sylva Rena Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley with the Rev. James West and the Rev. Hal Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Sylva Rena Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Milton R. Hix of Water Valley; two daughters, Elizabeth Betty Horne of Smithfield, Va., and Linda Wilkinson of Battery Park, Va.; a son, Walter E. Richardson of Water Valley; four stepdaughters, Belinda Donner of Spotsylvania, Va., Iris Mason of Pocatello, Ill., and Norma Pullen and Sarah Stewart, both of Water Valley; two stepsons, Richard Hix of Partlow, Va., and Thomas Hix of Monassas, Va.; two sisters, Betsy Lewis of Mobile, Ala., and Emma Shackelford of Louisa, Va.; a brother, Harry Newcomb of Louisa, Va.

Fanny Willett

TIFTON, Ga. - Fanny May Webb Willett, 89, formerly of Guin, Ala., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at the Tifton Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Marion County, Ala. She was a homemaker and a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church in Tifton, Ga.

Services were Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Bowen Donaldson Home for Funerals Chapel with the Rev. Freddy Thomas officiating. Burial was in Eldorado Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include five daughters, Lisa West and husband, Tony, of Chula, Ga., Loraine Ague and husband, Rayno, of Ocila, Ga., Virginia Kennedy and husband, Curtis, of Chula, Ga., Etheleane Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jean Bridges and husband, Joe, of Guin, Ala.; four brothers, Albert Webb Jr. of Guin, Ala., Robert Webb of Winfield, Ala., Virschel Webb of Ocala, Fla., and Woodrow Webb of Marion, Ark.; a sister, Corrine Pitchard of Ocala, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Leonard Willette; her parents, Albert Webb and Roe Chester Sanderson Webb; two brothers; and a sister.

Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

Nathan Hopper

TIPLERSVILLE - Nathan E. Hopper, 79, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven. He was a farmer and a member of the Tiplersville Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served four years during World War II.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Tiplersville Baptist Church with Bro. Barron Pilgrim and Bro. Tony Morrow officiating. Burial will be in Tiplersville Cemetery. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Scotia Davis Hopper of Tiplersville; a son, Darrell E. Hopper and wife, Melody, of Hernando; four sisters, Vernell Wicker of Corinth, Hazel Sistare of Bartlett, Tenn., Jane Hopper of Moscow, Tenn., and June Brown of Kentucky; five grandchildren, Michelle Johnston and husband, Drew, of Collierville, Tenn., Derick Hopper and wife, Rebecca, of Greer, S.C., Sharon Hopper Free and husband, Kevin, of Southaven, Alicia Wadlington and husband, Clayton, of Memphis, and Joshua N. Wren of Memphis; eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy M. and Vera Curle Hopper, and a daughter, Wanda J. Hopper Wren.

Pallbearers will be Kent Wilbanks, Mike Gunn, Joshua Wren, Derick Hopper, Clayton Wadlington, Kevin Free, Drew Johnston and Jack Quinn.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7 to 8 a.m. Wednesday, then at the church from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday.

WEST POINT - Cindy Hollis Stapp died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at her home. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Robinson Funeral Home of West Point.

Rickey Summey

IUKA - Rickey Dale Summey, 44, formerly of Waynesville, N.C., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at his home. He was a welder, a former truck driver and a U.S. Army veteran.

The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be announced later by Garrets Funeral Home in Waynesville, N.C. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of local arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Summey of Iuka; his parents, George Everett "Bill" and Jean Summey of Waynesville, N.C.; two sons, Jake Summey of Iuka and Jessie Nelson of Waynesville, N.C.; a daughter, Maggie Summey of Iuka; three sisters, Margaret "Jean" Fox and Susan Rider, both of Waynesville, N.C., and Pamela Kofron of Cascade, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Summey.

Memorials may be made to the humane society, Best Friends of Tishomingo County.

Lavada Hill

NEW ALBANY - Lavada Pannell Hill, 93, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at the Graceland Care Center. She was born Sept. 19, 1909, in New Albany to the late William and Minnie Hogue Pannell. She was a member of the Ellistown Baptist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Randy Hope and the Rev. Neal Davis officiating. Burial will be in Ellistown Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Wallace Hill and wife, Lois, of Waukegan, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Lois Hill of Blue Springs; two sisters, Lizzie Mitchell and Jettie Roaten, both of New Albany; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Hill, and a son, Junior Hill.

Pallbearers will be Jackie Hill, Jordan Hill, Ray Bishop, Ray Bishop Jr., John Bishop and Charles Hill.

Keith Cobb will be an honorary pallbearer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

BOONEVILLE - Michael Ryan Cook, infant son of Michael and Hope Chittom Cook of Booneville, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at the North Mississippi Medical Center Women's Hospital.

Graveside services were Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at the Gaston Cemetery with Minister Terry Roberts officiating. McMillan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Halie Chittom of the home; his grandparents, Stanley Chittom, Darlene Chittom, and Donny and Barbara Wever, all of Booneville; his great-grandparents, Ernestine Trimble of Booneville, Bill Chittom of Booneville, James Edward Wever of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Doras Gilman of Columbus City, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Hannah.

MATHISTON - Louise Burns Oswalt, 70, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Choctaw County. She was a retired cashier and a member of Sapa Baptist Church in Webster County.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harvey Overstreet officiating. Burial will be in Sapa Cemetery in Webster County.

Survivors include her husband, James W. "Jim" Oswalt of Mathiston; a daughter, Dorrine Oswalt LeBlanc and husband, Robert, of Greenville; two sons, Steve Oswalt and wife, Margaret of Grenada, and Jeff Oswalt of Greenville; a sister, Omar Lee Clark of Maben; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Tommy Lentz

FULTON - Tommy Gene Lentz, 51, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at his home. He was born Nov. 11, 1951, in Tishomingo County to the late Dock Cortez and Bertha Hall Lentz. He was a construction worker. He was a member of the Elgin Masonic Lodge in Elgin, Ill., and the Bensenville Masonic Lodge No. 1159.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Belmont City Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Dave Ringstad of Geneva, Ill., and Julie and Dennis Wileski of Marietta, Ga.; two nephews, one niece and one great-niece.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Wednesday.

Dennis Peoples

FULTON - Dennis Roland Peoples, 42, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at his home. He was born Dec. 26, 1960, in Tupelo to the late James Roland and Lynette Brannen Peoples. He was shipping manager at UFI Parkhill Furniture Company and a member of the Pine Grove Church of Christ. He was an avid sports fan.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Howard officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Potts Peoples of Fulton; two sons, Dallas Peoples and Garrett Peoples, both of Fulton; his mother, Lynette Peoples of Fulton; two brothers, James Michael Peoples and wife, Pat, and Barry Peoples and wife, Lorie Leigh, all of Fulton.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Roland Peoples.

Pallbearers will be Ray Spencer, Terry Steele, Greg Voyles, Bobby White, Jeremy Lafayette and Michael Williams.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Young, Eddie Lafayette and John Sutherland.

SALTILLO - Bonnie Ratliff Hubbard, 42, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at her home. She was born Dec. 10, 1961, in Tupelo to Bobby Gene and Betty Hatcher Ratliff. She was a waitress and a member of the Dorsey Baptist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Senter Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Wayne Thorn and Mike Deaton officiating. Burial will be in the Union Grove Church of God Cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Betty Wallace of Fulton; two brothers, Bobby Gene Ratliff Jr. of Guntown and Mathew Franklin Wallace of Fulton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Steve Hubbard, and a daughter, Jessica Nicole Hubbard.

Pallbearers will be Tim Jones, Thomas Ratliff, Robert Procosky, William Toughton, Gerald Oliver and Michael Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donna Oliver, Annette Toughton, Janette Procosky, Debbie Akers, Robin Akers and Linda Johnson.

BALDWYN - Joan "Jo" McCarthy, 72, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at the Baldwyn Nursing Facility after a long illness. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Baldwyn.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Robert McCoy officiating. Burial will be in the Baldwyn Masonic Cemetery.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Elizabeth Atkinson of Lafayette, La.; four nieces, Rosamary Chotin of Madisonville, La., Janet Helms of Pontotoc, Joan Rutland of Madison and Kim Haynes of Baldwyn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Zell McCarthy, and a sister, Odell Caldwell.

Pallbearers will be David Helms, Ronnie Rutland, John Haynes, Paul Haynes Jr., Billy Roberson and Simon Spight.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
