Bridge work will force the closing of two southwest Lee County roads next week, requiring motorists - including some school bus drivers - to find alternate routes.

In one case, the shutdown will be only a few days. In the other, it will be months.

A timber bridge on County Road 185 at Chiwappa Creek is set to be closed Tuesday at 9 a.m., District 4 Supervisor Tommie Lee Ivy announced. The 300-foot bridge is expected to remain closed to traffic for three to four days, Ivy said. "We're going to re-deck it," county road manager John Phipps said of the work. The job will be done by county road crews.

Road 185 links Road 506 east of the Natchez Trace with Road 600 east of Road 261. Chiwappa Creek crosses the road just west of Road 261.

The other project involves replacing a bridge on County Road 301 with a box culvert, Ivy said. That work is scheduled to start Wednesday.

The project falls under the state's Local System Bridge Program and will be handled by Tri-State Contractors Inc., a county engineer said. Road 301 links Road 154 with Road 54 at the Chickasaw County line. The work is scheduled to take 90 to 100 days, Ivy said. "We'll have detour signs put up when the work begins," Ivy said of the projects. "I'm going to call (the school superintendent) to let him know so he can take care of the buses."
