Second person struck, killed along lee county highway
A Wren man walking along U.S. Highway 45 in Tupelo early Friday morning was struck and killed by a car entering the roadway.
It was the second time in three days a man traveling on the side a Lee County highway has been fatally struck.
James A. Garner, 38, of the Wren community in Monroe County was hit about 5:30 a.m. as he walked along U.S. Highway 45. He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lee County Deputy Medical Examiner Rick Tucker.
The accident occurred near the Green Street exit in the southern part of Tupelo. Garner's car had apparently broken down further south on the highway and he was walking for help or to work, Tucker said.
A car entering the highway from Green Street hit Garner, who was walking alongside the northbound lane.
The motorist stopped, Tucker said. The area is poorly lit.
No charges had been filed late Friday. The incident is currently under investigation.
On Wednesday, a Verona man who was struck by a car while riding his bicycle along state Highway 145 in Verona.
Robert Gates, 41, died Thursday. The driver in the incident has been charged with DUI-death.
