Plans are still in the works to honor the remembrance of Ecru soldier Barry Mayo who was killed Monday, March 5, in Iraq.

The soldier’s body was flown to Dover Air Force Base last Saturday. Family members said at this point he will arrive in Tupelo sometime today with burial plans for Friday.

Private Mayo was in the Field Artillery Division of the 282nd Co. 1st Calvary Division and was killed in Baqubah, Iraq while on combat operations.

Recently home on a two-week leave, Mayo returned to Iraq on February 20, which was his 21st birthday. Mayo attended North Pontotoc, and received his GED about five years ago.

His body will lie in state at United Funeral Home in New Albany with burial in the Union Hill Cemetery west of New Albany.

The exact route the military will take from Tupelo to New Albany was unknown at press time.

Also, because of other military protocol the exact times of his departure was unknown, which may put his funeral later than the family anticipates.

Please read the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal for updates over the next two days.
