TUPELO - Thursday morning storms downed power lines, closing one of Tupelo's major thoroughfares during the busy morning commute time.
Tupelo city officials say the high winds associated with the storm system that knocked out power to residents for several hours has also closed Cliff Gookin Boulevard near Tupelo High School.
Tupelo communications director Leesha Faulkner confirmed to the Daily Journal that Cliff Gookin has been closed to traffic between the Natchez Trace Parkway and Graham Drive. She added that no other city streets are closed because of storm damage.
Tupelo Water & Light director Johnny Timmons said eight power poles in that section of road suffered damage. The road will have to be closed as crews work to replace the poles and restore the system to full power.
"I hope we can have the road back open by the end of today (Thursday)," Timmons said.
