A Tupelo toddler was in serious condition in surgical intensive care at North Mississippi Medical Center Saturday after being hit by a car.

Two-year-old Shannon Hittson II was struck by a car about 2:20 p.m. Saturday while walking along County Road 151 in the Bissell community. The youngster was airlifted to the hospital from the scene.

Hittson's mother, 20-year-old Barbara Bartlett, was also injured. She was in good condition late Saturday, having suffered a jaw injury.

Two other pedestrians were grazed by the car but were not injured. Both were juveniles and their names were not available.

Christopher Lee Rodgers, 21, of Verona was charged with reckless driving and driving with a suspended license in connection with the incident.

Witnesses told Lee County authorities Rodgers swerved to miss the four pedestrians, who were walking on the left side of the road.

When Rodgers swerved, witnesses said he went off the road, hit a ditch and lost control of his 1983 Mazda RX-7, hitting the four. Neither Rodgers or an unidentified passenger in his car were injured.

Rodgers was being held in the Lee County Jail. Bond had not been set late Saturday.
