VERONA - A Verona resident died Thursday after the car he was driving collided head-on with a dump truck on a Lee County road.

Leonard R. Garth, 23, died at the scene. His two teen-age passengers and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to North Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.

The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in a curve with an estimated 45-degree angle on County Road 814, also know as the Verona-Plantersville Road.

Lee County Chief Deputy Steve Brooks said Garth was traveling east in a 1996 Honda when he veered into the westbound lane in the sharp curve and collided head-on with a dump truck driven by Steven Hill, 35, of Nettleton.

Traffic was backed up for more than an hour as emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to free Garth from his vehicle, said Deputy William Putt.

Hill was admitted to NMMC with multiple trauma and was in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Curtis Estes, 19, of Verona was treated and released; and David Shannon, 16, of Plantersville was in good condition with multiple trauma, a hospital spokeswoman said.
