Joyce Hassell

BALDWYN – Joyce Barnett Hassell, 77, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at her home. She was born in Baldwyn and was a graduate of Blue Mountain College. She received a master’s degree in education from Memphis State University. She served with the Memphis City School System for 37 years as a teacher and a supervisor. She also was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly and served as the Representative for House District 96 in Memphis for 18 years.

In 1954, she was voted “May Queen” at Blue Mountain College. On several occasions she sang the National Anthem at the Tennessee Lincoln Day Dinner. She was Blue Mountain College’s Alumni of the Year in 1996. During that same year, she was the Republican speaker on the floor of the House of Representatives during the Bicentennial Celebration.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home in the Riverside Chapel. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home of Baldwyn is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Larry, of Memphis; her sister, Mary Lou Martin of Baldwyn; her brother, Roger Barnett of Baldwyn; two nieces; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Annie Michaels Barnett; and her nephew, Marty Martin, all of Baldwyn.

Rev. Rufus Hill Sr.

NEW ALBANY – Rev. Rufus Hill Sr., 86, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany.

SENATOBIA – Mary Gladys Little, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at North Oak Regional Hospital in Senatobia. Stewart Howell

MYRTLE – Stewart Alan Howell, 37, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at his residence. He was born April 27, 1972, to Clyde Howell and Marion McCallen. He was an employee of Riverside Traffic Systems, Inc. He was a member of the Amaziah Baptist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at United Funeral Service’s Chapel with the Rev. Jason Howell and Rev. Randy Futral officiating. Burial will be in the Temperence Hill Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Smithey Howell of Myrtle; his father and stepmother, Clyde and Anasticia Howell of Hickory Flat; his mother and stepfather, Marion and George McCallen of Walls; two daughters, Angel Howell of Myrtle and Maddison Laher-Howell of Myrtle; two sons, Chris Howell of Hickory Flat and Ethan Howell of Myrtle; two sisters, Michele Haley (Phillip) of Red Banks and Krystal Chism (Brandon) of Hickory Flat; and one niece and two nephews.

Pallbearers will be William Carpenter, Chris Burks, Wayne Pruitt, Billy Jack Rodgers, David Farr and Booker Farr.

Pete Walker

IUKA – James Luther “Pete” Walker, 93, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at Tishomingo Manor Nursing Home. He was born June 20, 1916, to James Houston and Roxie Dexter Walker. He was a hard working, lifelong farmer and was a member of Rocky Springs United Methodist Church. He served of the Tishomingo County Fair Board and was past secretary of the Methodist Men’s Club. He was a member of the Cattleman’s Association and served as Sunday School Superintendent of the church for 35 years. He also was a school bus driver for the Iuka School District.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with Bro. J.B. Burns, Bro. Ronnie Hatfield and Bro. Robert Armstrong officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nedra Quillen Walker of Iuka; two sons, James Floyd “Pete” Walker (Jackie) and Earl Walker (Becky), both of Iuka; one brother, Clarence Walker (Peggy) of Exton, Pa.; six grandchildren, Steven Walker (Renee), Matthew Walker (Melissa), Anthony Walker (Amy), Shana Price (Lyle), Julie Diaz (Oscar) and Wendy Estes (Sean); 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bennie Wayne Walker; three brothers, J.D. Walker, Jim Walker and John Houston Walker; and a sister, Rhoda Whitlock.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rocky Springs United Methodist Church.

BLUE MOUNTAIN – Billy Ford Koon, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at his home. He was a supervisor for Mohasco Furniture Company, retiring with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of the West Ripley Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Earnestine Hendrix Koon of Blue Mountain; one daughter, Elizabeth Beck (Butch) of Blue Mountain; two sons, Billy Kenneth Koon of Guntown and Gregory Doyle Koon of New Albany; six brothers, Gilbert Koon, Arthur Koon and Larry Koon, all of New Albany, David Koon of Tupelo, Milton Koon of Jackson, and Randall Koon of Ripley; five grandchildren, Deanna Miskelly (Marty) of Ripley, Regina Nicholson (Kevin) of Saltillo, Angela McGough (James) of Missouri City, Texas, Clint Koon (Mary) of New Albany and Josh Koon (Kerri) of Golden; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Jackson and Jodie Glenn Hicks Koon; two sisters, Janie Gilley and Brenda Koon; one grandson, Dwayne Koon; and one brother-in-law, Bob Gilley.

Sara Lunsford

IUKA – Sara Lunsford, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, as the result of an auto accident. She loved playing bingo, helping people and spending time with her grandchildren. She had a full life.

BURNSVILLE – David Stidham, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He loved music and played instruments including the guitar, piano and harmonica. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

HOUSTON – Ricky William Brooks, 52, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at Trace Regional Hospital in Houston. He was born March 10, 1957, to the late Jesse Richard Brooks and Gladys Virginia Taylor Brooks in St. Louis, Mo. He was disabled and a member of Arbor Grove Baptist Church in Houston.

HOUSTON – Hosie Bailey “H.B.” Morris Jr., 81, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Trace Regional Hospital in Houston. He was born Dec. 27, 1927, to the late Hosie Bailey Morris Sr. and Jennie Hill Morris. He was a member of Friendship West Baptist Church and was self-employed in sales in the grocery business.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Houston with Bro. Carl Morris and Bro. Robert Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the East Chickasaw Memorial Gardens in Okolona.

Bill Huckaby

SALTILLO – William “Bill” Huckaby, 75, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was a retired brick mason and a Baptist. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He also enjoyed yard work and bird watching.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Felix Junior Hutcheson officiating. Burial will be in the Camp Creek Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patsy DeVaughn Huckaby of Saltillo; one daughter, Charlotte McDaniel (Tommy) of Tupelo; three grandchildren, Nicole Sherwood (Shon), Sarah McDaniel and Dillon McDaniel; and two great- grandchildren, Katie Bynn Sherwood and Caroline Sherwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Vassie Huckaby; one daughter, Scarlett Stephens; and one son, William Luther Huckaby.

Ruth Bivens

HOUSTON – Ruth Olivia Franks Bivens, 85, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at her home. She was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Chickasaw County to the late Issac Morris Franks and Rachel Elizabeth Finn Franks. She was a member of the Saxon Memorial Church of the Nazarene and a retired custodian at Houston Middle School.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Ellzey Cemetery in Vardaman with Bro. Scott Sammuell officiating. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Teresa Suzanne Robbins (Shaw) of Van Vleet; one grandson, Clay Watkins of Houlka; one great-grandson, Waylon Lane Watkins of Houlka; one sister, Lillian Collier of Starkville, one niece, Marnita Henderson of Starkville; and one nephew, Ronald Nichols of Huntsville, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Priest Franks and Vester Franks; her first husband, William Otis Brown; and her second husband, Lowell Bivens.

Visitation will be today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pearson’s Chapel of the Nazarene church in Houston.

ASHLAND – Betty Jean James, 69, formerly of Ashland, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, in Memphis. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by McBride Funeral Home of Ripley.

Bro. Johnny Jordan Jr.

HAMILTON – Johnny Jordan Jr., 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, after a brief illness. He was born on Dec. 24, 1939, in Hamilton to Johnny Jordan Sr. and Ola Lindsey Anderson. He was a member of the Bethel M.B. Church in Hamilton. He was a father, a farmer and a good friend.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Bethel M.B. Church with the Rev. Homer Cannon and the Rev. Robert Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. Jackson Mortuary of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by six children, Johnny Earl Jordan (Robbie) of Birmingham, Ala., Frances French (James), George Holliday, Maggie McMillan, Denise Jordan and Betty Morgan, all of Hamilton; one aunt, Jessie Mae Loyd of Hamilton; one uncle, Austin Lindsey of St. Louis, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Odell, Alex and Willie James.

Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
