William Mattox

ARLINGTON, Va. – William Carey Mattox, 60, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean, Va. Interment will take place at a family cemetery in West Virginia. Arlington Funeral Home in Arlington, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his father, James Ed Mattox; his wife, Barbara Groves Mattox; his children, Benjamin Carey Mattox and Claire Armstrong Mattox; brothers, James C. Mattox of Greenwood, Steve J. Mattox of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and David B. Mattox of Mayock, N.C.; his stepmother, Reenee Mattox; seven nephews and six nieces, including Robert Noles Mattox of Madison.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Mary Mattox.

Nancy Solomon

BELDEN – Nancy Lou Hoggard Solomon, 67, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born Feb. 6, 1943, in Conway, Ark., to Marley and Lois Howard Hoggard. She spent much of her life in East Moline, Ill., where she was a longtime employee and retiree of the John Deere Company. She lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before recently moving to Tupelo to be near her son. She enjoyed reading and loved playing with her grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo Chapel with Elder Marshall Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time today. Holland Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her six children, Karen Solomon of Des Moines , Iowa, Ricky Solomon (Chris) of Ohio, Kelly Solomon Logan of Virginia, Kristie Solomon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ron Solomon (Daphnea) of Tupelo and Kimmy Papit (Garrett) of Lewisville, Texas; seven grandchildren, Terance, Donald, Matthew, Amanda, Caleb, Hayden and Abigail; her siblings, Betty Love, Bill Hoggard and Jim Hoggard, all of Arkansas, and Eugene Hoggard of Quad Cities, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Arnold Solomon, on July 3, 1984.

MOOREVILLE – Mary Gray, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010. She was born Oct. 23, 1941, to Sumpter and Lula Mae Roberts Barnes. She retired from the North Mississippi Medical Center after working 25 years in the billing department. She attended the East Main Church of Christ in Tupelo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Gary Williams and Clyde Mize officiating. Burial will be in Itawamba Memorial Garden.

Survivors include one son, Brian Gray (Lisa) of Tupelo; two daughters: Karen Golden of Mooreville and Cami Barritt of Nettleton; two stepdaughters, Patsy Young of Waukegan, Ill., and Judy Gray of Hull, Mass.; two grandchildren, Carrie Leach and Jonathan (Courtney) Leach; three great-grandchildren, Madelynn and Jon David Leach, and Caleb Sanders; sisters: Margaret Madison (George) of Panama Beach, Fla., and Helen Graham of Fulton; brother, Garry Barnes (Linda) of Rogersville, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Leach, Jeff Wilburn, Brandon Wilburn, Joe Davis, Bobby Lindley and Heath Lindley.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to service time Saturday.

MEMPHIS – Milton “Buddy” Weaver, 76, formerly of Cherokee, Ala., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at Methodist North in Memphis.

OKOLONA – Mary Gunn, 72, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. Born June 25, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Odell Ford Sr. and Luereanda Graham. She was a member of the Freewill Gospel Temple, where she served on the Mother Board. She was a cook, a seamstress and a former employee of Shearer Richardson Nursing Home.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Okolona Cemetery. Williams Memorial is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include five daughters, Dorothy McPeek (Rick) of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Dollie Hill of Okolona, Janet Perry (Carman) of Tupelo, Sandra Deans (Richard) of Cedar Bluff and Bertha Babbitt of Tupelo; five sons, Roy Hill (Dorothy) and Oliver Hill (Tameka), all of Okolona, Hudson Hill (Helen) of Amory, James Hill (Joyce) of Memphis and John Babbitt Jr. (Lenore) of Okolona; three sisters, Helen Dority (Bernie) of Missouri, Sarah Powell and Ann, both of St. Louis; 40 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren.

Geneva Murphy

FULTON – Geneva Ann Murphy , 78, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born June 26, 1932, to John and Hilda Shaw Holliday. She was a waitress and cook at A&S truck stop, Fulton Drive-In, and Comer’s Restaurant for many years. She enjoyed find-a-word puzzles, watching television, collecting frog collectibles, and talking with her friends and family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Cliff Jarrell officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Murphy of Fulton and Bobby Murphy of Tupelo; one daughter, Sandra Rayburn (John) of Golden; 1 brother, J.O. Holliday of Cordova, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Shelia White, Richard White, Nathan Murphy and Misty Murphy; three great-grandchildren, Chasity White, Dustin Lucas and Kayla Robbins.

She was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Murphy; and her parents.

OXFORD – Gladys Bowles, 91, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at her home in Oxford.

Morris Pickens

OKOLONA – Morris Dancer Pickens, 81, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Born Oct. 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Willie Dancer and Catherine Dancer. She was a member of Jolly’s Chapel, where she served with the Missionary Society and the Interfaith Choir. She was a member of the NAACP. She was a homemaker and a former salesclerk at Salvage Grocery and Fred’s Dollar Store. She spent her last year at Green House 400 in Tupelo, which she loved. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Odell Bowen and the Rev. Donnell Cherry officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Williams Memorial of Okolona is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Pickens (Carolyn), James Pickens and Wayne Pickens (Regina), all of Okolona; a son-in-law, Bill Scott of Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Jacqueline King of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters-in-law, Leola Neal of Houston, and Obine Hykes (Melvin) and Betty Dancer of St. Louis; one brother-in-law, L.C. Gladney (Christine) of Okolona; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Pickens; a daughter, Margaret Scott.

Wease Brown

MANTACHIE – Nella “Wease” Summers Brown, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. Born Oct. 29, 1931, she was the daughter of Ben and Maggie Summers. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love for her family, her church and her Lord was evident throughout her life. She was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and very active in the ladies’ Sunday School class. She served as an apprentice pharmacist and teacher assistant for many years.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Bro. Greg Jones, Bro. Castor Buse and Bro. Terry Paul Graham officiating. Burial will be in the Mantachie Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, George E. “Jack” Brown of Mantachie; one son, George E. Brown Jr. of Mantachie; three daughters, Kathy Evans of Mooreville, Debbie Word of Smithville and Melissa Baswell of Mantachie; six grandchildren, Lance Evans (Brandy) of New Albany, Summer Allen (Scotty) of Mantachie, Corey Evans of Mooreville, Hope Spears of Mantachie, Zackery Baswell of Mantachie and Jon Derrick Word of Smithville; four great-grandchildren, James Hayden Spears, Katie Elizabeth Evans, Jackson Allen and Landon Evans.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Frances Summers, Chloe Summers, Verma Lee Robbins and Qua Nichols; four brothers, Charlie, Marvin, Jess and Ed Summers; a special niece, Betty Cayson, and nephew, Sonny Summers; and her parents.

Pallbearers will be Lance Evans, Corey Evans, Scotty Allen, Zackery Baswell, J.C. Robbins, Tony Nichols, Nickey Nichols and Jon Derrick Word.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Mantachie.

TUPELO – Edward Earl “Tut” White died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at Grace Health Care in Memphis. He was born March 12, 1938, in Lee County to Joe W. and Annie White. He was retired from the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, where he worked for many years. He was a splendid gardener, managing and overseeing the beautiful flowers in his yard.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Tupelo with Pastor Willie J. Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. N.L. Jones & Son Funeral Directors of Tupelo is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one brother, Woodrow (Lillie) White; three aunts, Lena Mae Hickman, Annie Bell Gillard and Lorene Moore; his caregivers, Cassandra Sykes and Jennie Holiday; a special friend, Joyce Johnson; a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruthie Clanton, Pearlie Ellis and Ivory Barnes; and two brothers, Jimmy Dale White and Johnson Western White.

Velora Fowler

SHANNON – Velora Fowler, 65, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at her residence in Smithville after an extended illness. She was born Nov. 7, 1945, to William and Ann Culver. She attended Calvary Assembly in Tupelo. She loved gardening, family gatherings, and her grandkids.

Survivors include three children, Steve Fowler (Debbie), Barry Fowler and Ronnie Fowler (Jeannie), all of Shannon; five grandchildren, Shane Fowler (Kayla), Wendy Fowler, Chase Fowler, Caleb Fowler and Jessie Fowler; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Willie Bennett (Kelly), Shelia Plunkett and Marsha Allred; one brother, William Culver (Dorothy); one brother-in-law, Mike Fowler; sisters-in-law, Betty Stultz and Jackie Hester.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Fowler, her parents, William Culver and Ann Culver Higdon; one brother, Johnny Culver; one sister, Bet Gillentine; two children, Tommy Fowler and Dale Fowler; and two grandchildren, Cory Fowler and Spencer Fowler.

OLIVE BRANCH – Carolyn Daniels Reaves, 65, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, in Memphis, Tenn. Born in Jackson, she moved with her family to Whitehaven in 1960. She spent nearly 40 years as a dental hygienist in Whitehaven and Germantown, Tenn. She loved spending time with her grandchildren Gunner, Trevor, Spencer, Tyler and Cody Reaves, Kolton and Caleb Martin, and Mari Russell.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues. Sammy Lansdell will officiate.

She is survived by her husband, James (Tommy) Reaves of Olive Branch; a son, Albert E. Russell (Jennifer) of Buffalo, N.Y.; stepchildren, Tommy (Mindy) Reaves of Alabama, Richard (Michelle) Reaves of Alabama, and Toni Reaves of Southaven; her siblings, Allen Daniels, Vicki Pyles and Robin Daniels, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ivy A. Daniels, and her mother, Bennie Ruth Wilson Daniels.

PONTOTOC – Rachel Omelia Prater White, age 89, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 15, 2010. She died at Pontotoc Hospital after an extended illness. She was born June 28, 1921, in Pontotoc County.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Baldwin-Nowell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Robert L. White; son, Johnny White of Houston, Texas, area; daughter, Lois Shanks (George) of the Houston, Texas, area; son, Joel White (Kaye) of Pontotoc; two sisters, Annie Lee Warren and Dorothy McKnight, both of Pontotoc; one brother, Daniel A.
