The way you consume news has undoubtedly changed more than several times in the last decade.
Think back to a time before smart phones gave you incredible access to the world around you and before “www” was a commonly used term.
With so many modern technological advancements at our fingertips, it’s hard to remember sometimes how we ever functioned without them.
And each time technology advanced just a bit, newspapers have been right there exploring new and innovative ways to bring you the latest news and information.
The Daily Journal is no different.
We were an early adopter of the web, releasing our first website in 1996 and launching many different versions along the way as technology has improved and the way you consume news has changed.
But what hasn’t changed over the years is our goal and mission – to build community and improve the quality of life in Northeast Mississippi.
As that mission has stayed the same, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to seek out some of the most advanced technology available in our industry to keep you informed and continue building the communities we serve.
That tradition continues as we launch the new djournal.com, redesigned from the ground up with you in mind.
Our new website is built to help you get the news, sports and information you care about quickly and easily across all your devices.
We’ve implemented a responsive website design, which means djournal.com optimizes to the screen you’re looking at and displays the stories to best fit that device, whether it’s a phone, tablet or computer.
Apart from a revamped design, our new website also provides some significant features that we believe will make it easier to stay informed about the things you care about.
You can follow specific topics and reporters that are relevant to your interests and get an email notification when those stories are published. Simply click the “Follow” button at the end of their stories. You can also click their name and see their complete story archive, so you can catch up on the topics that matter to you most.
Want a quick roundup of the top items throughout the region that day? Sign up for our revamped email newsletter that brings you the latest news straight to your inbox each morning.
Our newly designed live e-edition brings you every page of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal accessible on all your devices. You’ll be able to scroll through each page and get all the news that was fit to print that day. But you’ll also receive updates on any breaking or developing stories – even after the print edition is published. As our reporters update a story, you’ll get the latest version right there on your e-edition.
Those are just a few of the new features we’re excited about with the new website, but there’s plenty more built-in that we think you’ll enjoy.
Any time we launch a new digital initiative, it’s important to stop and reflect on the significant role our print product still plays in our overall mission.
As I’ve mentioned in columns before, we consider ourselves somewhat unique at the Journal in that we’re constantly looking at pushing advancements in both our print and online products. You’ll find that many newspapers these days are selecting just one and leaving the other behind.
We continue to see incredible value in our print edition and other print products, which is why we’re always seeking to improve those for our readers.
The new djournal.com is just one part of some major technology upgrades that have been going on at the Daily Journal, and throughout all of Journal Inc., over the last few months.
We’ve invested in a new content management system that allows us to seamlessly publish to multiple channels – print, web and others – at the same time.
This will allow our reporters to bring you content to the website faster than ever before and give us more time to focus on having the most in-depth coverage in our print edition.
We’ve also upgraded to the most cutting-edge design software in the industry to give our page designers the opportunity to take our print edition to the next level.
These are all part of our goal to keep you informed about the things you care about in new and innovative ways as we continue our mission to build community throughout the region.
Our new website, and ongoing upgrades to our print edition, showcase the Journal’s commitment to remaining your trusted news source for all things Northeast Mississippi.
It’s a new look with the same mission.
