Driver's license waste

State takes too much time

Who gave the state a license to steal so much of our time?

Whatever the explanation, there is no excuse for the inadequate services provided by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety's driver's license offices ...

As one reader, who would prefer not to be named, told us:

"In the past 18 months or so I have had two daughters reach driving age and have suffered the travails of walking them through the licensing process. ... In my most recent attempt to help my younger daughter earn her intermediate license my wife and I have invested about 10 hours in four trips to no avail ..."

Gov. Haley Barbour said again last month that the process of obtaining a driver's license was "unacceptable across the state ..."

He wants the Legislature to consider handing the whole operation over to a private contractor.

But for now, it is the responsibility of the executive branch ... That makes it the governor's responsibility.

And it is one that demands more of his attention.
