The Oxford Park Commission is gearing up for a summer full of activities and programs with something for all age groups in the community.
Registration for summer activities opened last week and will remain open in throughout the end of the month. OPC has about 25 different summer activities currently available.
Classes and programs have, in years past, been primarily active throughout the month of June, with a few bleeding over into the month of July. Classes being offered this year have been expanded upon, particularly the tennis camps offered by OPC.
“We’re doing more individual tennis camps this year,” said Mike Young, program director for OPC. “We saw a need in the community for more classes, so we wanted to give people the opportunity to do these all summer if they needed to. Our camps are usually only about a week long, so we’re going to be creating more of those for the month of July. We want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to get out there and swing a racket if that’s what they want to do.”
In addition to camps hosted on site at the OPC Activity Center at City parks, there are also canoeing and camping trips that can be taken with groups.
This is also the first year that OPC will be offering golf lessons through the Ole Miss Golf Course. The lessons are bring done in a partnership with the golf course and OPC and will be available for adults as well as youth. Classes will be taught by a professional from the golf course.
“I think it’s important for us to give everyone the chance to try something out and explore different kinds of recreation,” said Young. “Until you get out there and try it, you’re not gonna know. So we try to push so many of these during the summer because kids and parents aren’t caught into the hustle and bustle of school life. It gives people the time to try new things. It’s the perfect time of the year. It’s a little warm, but you want have as many rain-outs for our events.”
A full list of available classes, camps and programs can be found by going to www.oxfordparkcomission.com, scrolling over the “Programs” tab and selecting “Currently Registering.”
In addition to the different programs that people can sign up for, OPC will be bringing back their popular Summer Movie Series. The even is held in Avent Park and features music and a movie. OPC works with the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council to select the artist who will perform at the event. After the music and once the sun begins to set, attendees sit on the hill where a movie is projected onto a large screen.
More information on the Summer Movie Series will become available later in the month.
