The University of Mississippi Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer is organizing their annual bar crawl fundraiser Drink Pink.
The fundraiser will feature a tour of bars on the Oxford Square, drink specials and special prizes. Colleges Against Cancer is an offshoot of the American Cancer Society. It’s an outlet for college students interested in taking up the cause to organize and raise money for research.
The Ole Miss Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer has been organizing the Drink Pink Bar Crawl for the last three years. It’s always held in October because all of the money raised from the event go into researching a cure for breast cancer.
Tickets for the bar crawl can be purchased ahead of time for $25. This increased to $30 on the day of the actual event. Tickets include an exclusive t-shirt and exemption from paying any covers at the bars participating. Each of the bars will also have drink specials set aside for those who will be be involved in the bar crawl. It also enters them into raffles to win a variety of prizes.
Jennifer Ventura is a junior marketing major at Ole Miss. She grew up on Long Island participating in Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society is something Ventura and her family have always believed in supporting. When she came to the University of Mississippi, she started looking for ways to continue being involved. Last year, she participated in Relay for Life and this year she’ll be doing that again as well as raising money through Colleges Against Cancer.
Ventura is excited for the opportunity to be part of a unique event that’s helping to raise money for a good cause. She said that some people have criticized the fundraiser and said that it’s just another example of a student organization glorifying alcohol consumption, but Ventura disagrees with that.
“There are a lot of students who attend the university as well as residents of Oxford who are all over 21. I think this is a really good deal for people who like to go out and enjoy themselves. This is a way for those people to give money to a good cause that will be used by a reliable organization. I think it’s a great thing. I’ve been talking to a few people about it just this week and they’re all really excited for it.”
Most of the feedback on the bar crawl has been positive. Those who have participated in years past had a great time doing it and those students who are just now old enough to participate are excited as well. It’s something they’re all looking forward to. In addition to the drink specials and the fun of just spending time with friends, the ticket exempting them from paying a cover at every venue allows them to enjoy several different bars in one night.
Bars participating in the bar crawl include the Library, Rafters, Annex, Roosters, Levee, Funky’s, Harrison’s, Roundtable and The Cellar.
The event kicks off Friday, October 25 at 6 p.m. and goes until 11. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
