SPRINGVILLE - The South Pontotoc Lady Cougars had little trouble on Saturday with visiting Tremont, as they rolled 50-6 over the Lady Eagles.
By halftime, the Lady Eagles had scored all they would get in the game. South took a 31-6 lead into the locker room.
Rebekah Pilcher got the Lady Cougars rolling early in the third quarter with a steal and finish. Sydney Brazil grabbed a tough rebound, and then Maisy Canerdy sank a jumper to make the score 35-6.
Laila Houpt pulled down a strong defensive board and passed it ahead to Brazil, who drew the foul and made one of two free throws.
Caroline Cook picked a Lady Eagle’s pocket for a steal, kicked it ahead to Pilcher, whose bucket gave the Lady Cougars a 38-6 lead heading into the final quarter.
Brianna Jamison fed Cook in the paint to start South’s final push to victory. Maggie Gaspard went up strong and put back an offensive rebound for two. Cook nailed a turnaround jumper at the top of the key for a deuce. Then Gaspard sank a 3-pointer.
Daisa Ivy added a steal and a layup, and then Jamison got a steal, a layup, and drew a foul, sinking one free throw to finish South’s scoring.
Tremont 44, South Pontotoc (B) 30
Stroud Mills nailed a jumper, as the Cougars opened up a 3-1 lead to start the contest.
Aaron Pilcher drew a foul and hit both free throws, and Jayden Hooker nailed a jumper from the top of the key to put South ahead 8-5 as the first quarter expired.
Tremont’s Tyler Whitaker hit a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles even at 8.
South’s C.J. Virges answered with a 3-pointer. Then the Cougars moved the ball well, as Skylar Holloway fed it in to Alex Collins who dished to Will Reeves for a nifty bucket, pulling South to within a point at 17-16.
Tremont’s Jesse Sartin added a 3-pointer, as the Eagles took a 24-16 lead into halftime.
The second half opened with South’s Skylar Holloway making a nifty bounce pass in the lane to Collins, who nailed a jumper at the free throw line, adding a deuce to South’s score.
Sartin hit another 3-pointer, as the Eagles began to pull away with a 29-18 lead at the 4:26 mark of the third quarter.
South’s Holloway made a quick pass to Reeves, who whipped it over to Mills for a layup, pulling the Cougars a little closer at 29-20.
Reeves and Collins added 3-pointers, but the Cougars could not keep pace with Tremont. The Eagles began the fourth quarter with a 34-26 lead and outscored South 10-4 to pick up a 14-point win.
