All three Pontotoc county teams were competing in different locations Saturday, with the Vikings traveling to the Itawamba XC Invite, hosted by Mantachie High School. The boys sqaud finished fifth with an average time of 20:54. Their top four runners all finished in the top thirty. Josh Tutor again led the way, finishing 15th overall with a time of 19:11. Tutor was followed by Aaron Chapman (20th-19:30), Hunter Burleson (22nd-20:11), and Austin Reeder (28th-21:01). The rest of the Viking varsity finishers were Dalton Hanna, Justin Ferguson, and Dawson McCord.
“We had a good day,” said coach Tabitha Quillian. “Our top four scored really, really well, but again their is still a gap there between them and our number five."
“If we can get our number five runner pulled up a little bit closer to the top four, then I expect us to be able to move on up as far as team scoring is concerned.”
North’s lone varsity girls runner, Constance Gapp, had a good day as well, finished 23rd overall with a 21:09.
“She was three spots away from being in the top 20,” said Quillian. “She is steadily improving and getting closer to that top finishers group.”
In the junior high races, North had two boys and three girls finish in the top 12. Clay Matthews (15:58) and Jake Reeder (16:09) finished back-to-back at the 10th and 11th spots overall. It was Matthews’ second straight such finish. Abigail Boyd turned in an 11th place race with a time of 19:23. Also competing in the junior high events were J.D. Burleson, Anikan McCord, Cole Morris, Dallas Bailey, and Armando Hernandez on the boys side. The rest of the junior high girls were Paige Chism, Felicity Holmes, McKenna Franks, Carley Sneed, and Anna Bolen.
