BULLDOGS BATTER IAHS FOR 35-0 VICTORY
By Todd Vinyard
FULTON Two games into the 1996 season the New Albany Bulldogs have already tied their win total from last year's 2-8 record.
The combination of Shauwn High's quarterback skills, a bend but don't break defense, and new coach Terry Allen have already produced two wins for New Albany (2-0). New Albany's latest win came Friday night in a 35-0 decision over Itawamba Agricultural High School.
"We just believe again," said sophomore Craig Foley, who is part of a defense that hasn't given up a point in six quarters.
Even in the loss IAHS, which was 1-9 last season, had thoughts of better days. IAHS falls to 0-1 in coach Jimmy Mitchell's debut.
"We just have to try to get better every play," Mitchell said.
A New Albany player who looks better every play is the High. The senior continued to run the option perfectly Friday. On the second play from scrimmage High went 64 yards for the game's first touchdown.
High had 102 yards rushing in the first half. Ross Barkley added the extra point to give New Albany a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the first quarter.
IAHS showed promise on offense on its second offensive series. Sophomore quarterback Jon Morton, who was under a heavy New Albany rush all night, completed three passes along with the running of Demond Colburn to get to the 3-yard line.
On third-and-goal Morton tried to get rid of the ball while being sacked, but the pass picked off by Foley.
New Albany started the second quarter like the first with a scoring drive. Anthony Lipsey finished the nine-play march with a 7-yard TD jaunt. Barkley's PAT was good, and New Albany had a 14-0 advantage at the 9:36 mark.
The Bulldog defense stiffened again and held IAHS on fourth down to get the ball back.
High threw his first pass of the night on the next play, and connected with a wide open Lipsey on a 53-yard pass-and-run for a TD. Barkley's kick made it 21-0 at the half.
"It was just a good throw and catch," Allen said. "We spread them out a little with the run and took advantage of it."
Besides nailing three extra points Barkley had two kicks for touchbacks in the first half.
IAHS got in trouble on offense when Morton went out before the end of the second half with what Mitchell said appeared to be a rib injury.
New Albany continued to dominate in the second half. Running back Lee Henson scored on a left, then right, 7-yard TD run, and Rodney Boles finished things off in the fourth quarter with a 51-yard TD run. Barkley made both PAT.
