Half-watching the Arizona-Arizona State game last night I noticed a couple of things, one that Noel Mazzone is back in college football as offensive coordinator at Arizona State. He's had two stints at Ole Miss. He was in Oxford for all of Tommy Tuberville's time and was with Tuberville for his first three seasons at Auburn.

Mazzone was the OC for Ed Orgeron during his first season at Ole Miss but was fired before the season was complete, though he remained to coach through the final game.

He was with the Jets for three seasons after, but I quit keeping up with him. I notice that he spent the 2009 season as OC at Panther Creek High School in Cary, N.C., before being hired at by Dennis Erickson at Arizona State in January.

Last night on the broadcast, Jesse Palmer kept calling him “No-el” Mazzone. Noel was always a favorite of the media, easy to talk to and a good quote. …

Back in real-time, we're still on the Ole Miss assistant coach watch today. Houston Nutt says he has not timetable for a decision or an announcement regarding the future of his coaching staff. The current staff has been out recruiting this week, including a stop by defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix at Tupelo trying to lure defensive tackle P.J. Jones. ...

During last night's battle for the “Territorial Cup” I also noticed the updated “Big Board” for ESPN's lead NFL analyst, Mel Kiper Jr. A.J. Green, the Georgia wide receiver is No. 3, LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson No. 4. Auburn DT Nick Fairley, Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett and Alabama WR Julio Jones also make the list, as Kiper projects the SEC to have six of the first 10 players taken in the 2011 draft. …

Finally, I saw Mark May giving lots of love to Auburn heading into tomorrow's SEC championship game against South Carolina. The Auburn video clips shown were from the Ole Miss game. They highlighted Auburn running backs Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb, and the clips really emphasized the lack of speed by the Ole Miss defense as the McCalebb and Dyer ran away from the Rebels on a couple of plays. …

The basketball Rebels are at home tomorrow night at 7 against an athletic Southern Miss team this is playing well in a 5-0 start. I am trying to knock out a good portion of Christmas shopping today, so I'll be in and out on the blog. …
