COLUMBUS - The 100th birthday of legendary baseball broadcaster Red Barber will be celebrated today in his hometown.

Barber was an announcer for the Cincinnati Reds (1934-1938), the Brooklyn Dodgers (1939-1953) and the New York Yankees (1954-1966). In 1981, he began a dozen years as a commentator on NPR's Morning Edition.

He died in 1992.

A historic marker will be unveiled this afternoon near the house where Barber grew up, with a dinner tonight on the Mississippi University for Women campus.
