The District I baseball team went 4-2 in the State Games of Mississippi last weekend in Meridian to capture second place.

They lost their opening round game, 8-7, to District Three on Thursday. Two IAHS players did well at the plate in the game playing for the District One team. Brian Dozier had a double and two singles. Clay Weatherford had a single and a solo home run.

Mitch Moreland of Amory pitched the team to victory in game two with a complete-game, six hitter for the 6-5 win over District Two. Weatherford had a double and scored two runs for the winning team.

Weatherford led the District One team at the plate in the first game on Saturday with a pair of singles as they downed District Four 7-6.

District One scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 16-4 rout of District Three on Saturday. Dozier ripped two singles in the game.

In the championship game, District One fell, 2-1, to the undefeated team from District Six. Weatherford had two of his team's six hits in the game.

The District One team got to the Gold Medal game with a 6-0 shutout of District Four Sunday morning. Dozier had two singles and three RBIs in the game

It was District One's fourth year in a row to make it to the Gold Medal game. They took home gold in 2000 and 2001 and silver in 2002 and 2003.

"It's interesting when you throw a group of All-Star kids together like this from all over a district," District One Coach Brent Grantham said. "The way they bonded was amazing.

"It was a long weekend, but these kids gave everything they had and we all had a really good time."

Grantham is the head coach at Corinth High School.
