BOONEVILLE Murphy's Law is alive and well. Just ask Northeast Community College after Thursday's thrashing at the hands of the Holmes Bulldogs.

The Tigers (1-4 overall, 1-1 division) fell behind Holmes 21-0 after one quarter en route to a 41-8 North Division loss at Booneville.

"The only thing I can say is that Holmes did a great job and just beat us every way you can be beat on a football field," Northeast coach Laurin Collins said. "They were just better than us tonight. My hat is off to them."

One reason behind Holmes' success is that the Bulldogs were able to do what no other Tiger opponent had been able to accomplish successfully pass the football.

"They kept blitzing us and that left our receivers man-to-man and their DB's just couldn't handle that," said Bulldog quarterback Gabe Alaniz who completed 11-of-17 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. "Everything was working tonight."

Alaniz, who was pulled after only two-and-a-half quarters, came up only 28 yards short of matching the entire amount of passing yardage Northeast had allowed thus far this season.

Northeast's offensive attack sputtered from the beginning, fumbling the ball away twice and throwing two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

The Bulldog offense was working from the get-go. Alaniz picked apart the Tiger defense on the opening drive, finding Nick Helms on a 26-yard pass before connecting on a 36-yard strike to Michael McField, who drug two Tigers into the end zone for the score. Todd Yuille's run for the two-point conversion made it 8-0.

Northeast fumbled the handoff on its second play from scrimmage to set Holmes up deep in Tiger territory. Bulldog tailback Michael Carter found paydirt two plays later when he scampered for a 12-yard touchdown.

Alaniz wasn't through. After tailback Frankie Franklin's 68-yard run put Holmes in business at the Northeast 10, Alaniz found Adrian Stafford for a 12-yard touchdown toss. Glen Beard's extra point made it 21-0 with 2:54 left in the first quarter.

Franklin led all rushers with 100 yards on 10 carries.

Holmes (3-2) scored once more before the half when linebacker Kelvin Rounds intercepted Antonio Kirkpatrick's pass and returned it 75 yards for the score and a 28-0 Bulldog lead.

Holmes piled it on in the third period when Alaniz took it himself for a four-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs followed up on the next drive when Franklin rushed for a two-yard touchdown.

Northeast's lone score came with 5:19 left in the game when backup quarterback Stephen Enfinger of Saltillo connected with Antonio Justice of Booneville on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Enfinger then hit tight end Ike Ihejoto for the two-point conversion.

Northeast plays at Northwest next Thursday.
