Caley Chrismond usually finishes things for West Point. He started them off in West Point's 7-4 win over Nebraska Monday night at the American Legion MidSouth Regional.

Chrismond went eight innings allowing only four hits and striking out eight. Scott Atwood hit his third homer of the tournament and picked up the save as West Point advanced to the final day of the tourney today at the Tupelo High School baseball field. The Packers play the winner of the Oklahoma/Tupelo game at 10 a.m. Nebraska was eliminated.

"Caley has been our closer and a big part of why we are here," West Point coach Frank Portara said. "He helped us get some innings in. Hopefully, our hitting will start to come around."

The tournament was pushed back two hours due to a rain delay. Tupelo's game with Oklahoma didn't start until 9 p.m. Monday, and didn't end before the Daily Journal deadline.

Chrismond hadn't pitched an inning in the tournament. Portara said Chrismond was used as a starter to save the aces of his staff for today.

"I have never gone eight innings in my life," said Chrismond, who pitches for Oak Hill Academy in West Point. "My curve ball and fast ball were hitting the corners."

Ole Miss baseball signee Robert Shelton gave Chrismond some breathing room with a single to score West Points final two runs in the eight.

Atwood's homer in the seventh tied things at 4-4. Shelton scored the go ahead run for West Point on a wild pitch in the inning.

Scott Munter of Nebraska drove a pitch over the centerfield fence to drive in Brendan Riley and Jeff Wellwood. The three-run homer made it 3-0 Nebraska in the top of the first inning.

Atwood had one hit in four appearances and three RBI, while Shelton was one-for-four with two RBI. Atwood's homer tied him with Ryan North of Oklahoma for the most home runs in the first four days of the five day event. Robert McKay was leading the way hitting for West Point with a .467 average entering the Nebraska game. McKay was two-for-three against Nebraska.

West Point improves to 46-7 overall and 3-1 in the tournament, while Nebraska finishes 49-12 and 2-2 in the tournament.
