High school basketball shifts into a new playoff format this week with the two opening rounds of MHSAA state tournament played on school courts.
Girls play begins Monday with 38 teams from the Journal’s coverage area in action, led by top-ranked Booneville. Monday’s winners advance to games on Friday with a trip to Jackson at stake.
Boys play begins Tuesday, with 36 area teams led by top-ranked Corinth. Those winners advance to games on Saturday for the right to advance.
In Class 5A and 6A, top-seeded teams – including Oxford’s boys and girls – get byes into Friday.
The state tournament quarterfinals are March 2-5 at Jackson’s Mississippi Coliseum (boys) and Jackson State (girls).
The boys and girls state semifinals and finals will be played March 7-12 at the Mississippi Coliseum.
