The next-to-last week of the 2016-17 high school athletics season starts today with a full schedule.
The MHSAA Class I Girls State Golf Tournament tees off today at Big Oaks in Saltillo with Nettleton’s Riley Mayhew the favorite to win medalist honors in the two-day, 36-hole event.
Mayhew, a freshman, is already a two-time defending state medalist. She helped lead her team to last season’s state championship.
In boys golf, the Class 3A tournament begins today at Patrick Farms in Pearl. The Class 5A tournament starts today at Canton Country Club. The final round in both events is scheduled for Tuesday.
In baseball, Game 3 of the Class 5A quarterfinals series between defending state champion Oxford and Lewisburg is scheduled for today at 7 p.m. in Oxford. The Chargers won 11-0 in Game 1, but dropped Game 2 at Lewisburg, 2-1.
The state semifinals are scheduled to be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. The state tournament is May 17-20 in Pearl.
In softball, Mantachie hosts Game 2, and Game 3 if needed, today at 6 p.m. against East Union in Class 2A. The Lady Mustangs won 9-6 in Game 1. The series was postponed by Saturday’s state track.
The MHSAA high school softball tournament, featuring Tupelo (6A), Mooreville (3A), Hamilton (1A) and either East Union or Mantachie (2A), is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland.
In tennis, the MHSAA team championships will be decided today in Jackson and Oxford.
Defending 4A champion New Albany plays Newton County for the title at the Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson.
At the FNC Tennis Center in Oxford, Tupelo Christian Prep defends it Class 1A title against Hattiesburg Sacred Heart while host Oxford defends it 5A title against Stone County.
Individual championship play begins this afternoon and wraps up Wednesday with finals at both sites.
