As if the Tupelo Golden Wave got a healthy dose of a run-oriented team last week in the Hernando Tigers.
Today, the Wave host the undefeated Grenada Chargers for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Do the Chargers run, too? In five games, Grenada has passed the football 25 times.
“We’ll be undersized, but we just have to match up,” Tupelo head coach Trent Hammond said. “We’ll need to be in the right spots, playing the right techniques.”
The Division 1-6A game will be Tupelo’s first home contest since its season opener against Lafayette.
“It will be good to play in front of our home crowd, but we’re looking at Grenada as the game this week,” Hammond said. “We have to take each division game with the same importance.
“And if we win, we’re a step closer to being a playoff team.”
Tupelo (5-0, 1-0) is coming off a 41-7 victory over Hernando on the road. It was the first game of the season where the Tupelo defense or special teams did not score a point, though Hammond feels the Wave punt defense influenced Hernando into a couple of short kicks.
Hammond also praised outside linebacker Justin Clifton, who had a pair of tackles for losses. The Tupelo coach liked the offense for finishing drives, with nice efforts by quarterback Daniel Bristow, running back Quinn Tiggs and offensive linemen Nathan Cox and States Norman.
Chargers unbeaten
Grenada (5-0, 1-0) is coming off a 51-14 victory against DeSoto Central, and the Chargers run attack averages 405 yards per game. A focal point of the Grenada offensive is Nathan Evans, who has been clocked under 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, while the defense features linebackers Genard Avery and Shareef White, both having committed to Louisiana Lafayette.
“This is a huge game for both teams,” Grenada head coach Ashley Kuhn said. “We’ve had some big offensive plays and our defense has played well at times.
“We’re playing pretty physical.”
