Itawamba Community College successfully began its defense of its three-time defending north division championship Thursday night at Coahoma, 84-57. Melvin Morgan of Memphis led five Indians in double figures with 18 points. Itawamba (5-3, 1-0) will now host Northwest (8-2, 0-1) Monday night at 8 p.m. in their home opener inside the division.

“Northwest will be the quickest team we’ve faced so far this year,” said ICC head coach Marty Cooper. “As for us, we’re getting better but we’re not yet where we want to be.”

The ICC Lady Indians (5-4, 1-0) have won or shared the last two division crowns and they also opened league play with a victory Thursday night in Clarksdale, 76-59. Pontotoc’s Lori Crudup, who leads the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg, led all scorers with 18 points. Northwest also was victorious in its opener inside the conference with a 79-73 over defending Region 23 champion, East Mississippi.

Tip-off for the women’s game at the Davis Event Center is set for 6:00 p.m. You’ll be able to listen to both games on the ICC basketball broadcast network beginning at 5:40 p.m. As always, you’ll have your choice of listening on FM95 (95.7) or on the College Web site, or
