Tupelo’s Maddie Jasper had a strong showing at the USA Weightlifting National Youth Championships this past weekend.
Jasper won the snatch competition and finished fifth overall in the 65-kilogram weight class of the 16-17-year-old age division. She lifted 83 kilograms – about 183 pounds – to earn her gold medal.
The event – held in Anaheim, California – was Jasper’s first national competition in weightlifting. The former gymnast and CrossFit athlete began focusing on the sport in October.
“Competing at nationals was more nerve-wracking than I could have imagined, but it was also a really fun experience,” Jasper said. “I was so thankful to have my family and my coach, Tyler (Smith), cheering me on this weekend and was reminded again of how faithful the Lord is.”
