OXFORD – Ole Miss shortstop Grae Kessinger was selected in the in the second round with pick No. 68 by the Houston Astros late Monday, the first day of the MLB amateur draft.
Kessinger becomes the first Ole Miss player off the board. He’s a junior and member of the 2017 Ole Miss recruiting class which was ranked No. 1.
Other Ole Miss underclassmen are expected to be drafted today and tomorrow. The draft resumes at 11:30 a.m.
Kessinger is currently hitting .332.
He hit .405 in SEC play this season and was named first-team All-SEC.
He is the grandson of former Ole Miss multi-sports star Don Kessinger, a six-time MLB all-star with the Cubs and former Ole Miss coach.
