(Armed and dangerous - Viking catcher Ben Berryhill loads and guns down Raleigh runner at third.)

At the Dizzy Dean State Tournament in Fulton last week, the North Pontotoc Vikings came away with a 4-2 win over Raleigh High and sent Amory High School home in an elimination game 5-4.

Before the Amory win, the North boys picked up their first loss of the tourney 13-2 to Brandon High School. Adam Coker, Reid Flowers, Ben Russell, Chris Hilliard, and Chris Jenson got hits for the Vikings in the game.

It was do or die again for North after beating Amory in the Water Valley game.

This game would not get started until 11 p.m. on Wednesday night because of a rain delay and an extended game that preceded the Viking - Blue Devil shootout.

Water Valley eliminated North 16-15 in the game that ended at 2:30 a.m.and ended the season.

Corey Adams led the Vikings at the plate with 3 hits, followed by Chris Jenson and Alex Hill with 2 apiece. Jeremy Davis slapped a double while Reid Flowers and Ben Russell added singles.

“I am very pleased with the summer we had as a team,” said Viking head coach Chad Anthony.

“We won some big games which will help us next season.”

Ben Russell picked up the opening win in the tourney over Raleigh striking out 4 while walking no one.

With the score tied at 0, Alex Hill walked to start the third inning and later scored on a sac fly by Reid Flowers.

In the fifth Chris Hilliard stole second after drawing a walk and scored on Corey Adams’ single to right.

Hill reached again in the sixth on an error by the Raleigh shortstop and moved to second on Adam Coker’s sac bunt.

Hill scored after singles by Flowers, Russell, and Hilliard.

Alex Hill’s double to the gap in left center plated Chris Jenson with the Viking’s last run in the seventh.

Raleigh scored their 2 runs in the sixth on 3 hits and a hit batter.

Hilliard and Flowers both made diving catches in the outfield to help perserve the win.

The Amory game

North entered the seventh inning trailing the defending 3A State Champion Runner-ups 4-0.

On two hit batters and a walk, the Panthers loaded the bases with Berryhill, Eric Walls, and Hill respectively.

Coker then drew a walk to put the North boys on the board 4-1.

Then Viking center fielder Reid Flowers rose to the occasion with a triple down the left field line to tie the game at 4.

Amory then gave Russell and Hilliard intentional walks to load the bases with no outs.

Adams then hit a grounder that the pitcher fielded and made the force at the plate, but the catcher, trying to complete the double play, pulled the first baseman off the bag with a wild throw.

Russell then beat the attempted throw to the plate by the first baseman, and the North boys win the game in dramatic fashion.

Reid Flowers had 2 hits in the game with Russell and Hilliard adding singles.

“We competed very well all summer and improved in a lot of areas,” said Coach Anthony.

“We also see the areas we need to work harder on to be a great program.”

Anthony acknowledges all the hard work and dedication the players and parents put into the summer program and is “looking forward to our upcoming high school season.”
