Ole Miss running back John Avery's playing status is still day-to-day Rebel head coach Tommy Tuberville said Thursday on his weekly call-in radio show.

"We want to be sure he is 100 percent," Tuberville said from the Downtown Grill in Oxford on Tupelo radio station WZLQ-FM 98.5. "He wants to play and we will have to see."

Avery, who was seventh in the SEC in rushing last season, did practice Wednesday and Thursday Tuberville said.

The senior tailback gained three yards on his second carry of the game last week against Central Florida, but came down on his left elbow and did not return to action as the Rebs won 24-23 in overtime. X-rays revealed a dislocated left elbow, not a fracture.

Ole Miss hosts SMU at 6 p.m. Saturday in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

If Avery doesn't play juniors Tonny Cannion, Alishma Alexander or freshman Deuce McAllister would fill in.

"We will just prepare like any other week and be ready," Cannion said.
