Oxford High school standout Morgan O’Connor was named the Gatorade Mississippi Girls Soccer Player of the Year on Thursday.
O’Connor, an Ole Miss signee, is a three-time Daily Journal girls soccer Player of the Year. She was also the 2017 winner of the Gatorade statewide honor.
The 5-foot-2 senior forward scored 34 goals and passed for seven assists this past season, leading the Chargers (18-2-1) to the Class 6A quarterfinals.
“Morgan O’Connor is just at a different level than any other player in the state,” said Dean Joseph, head coach of Northwest Rankin High. “She’s the most athletic and effective player we faced. Every time she got the ball, it looked like she would score or make something happen.”
Lafayette’s Alley Houghton was also a two-time winner of the statewide award, in 2015 and 2016.
Ashton LeBlanc of Gulfport High School was named the Gatorade Mississippi Boys Soccer Player of the Year for the second year in a row last week. A senior defender, he's a University of Tulsa signee.
