JACKSON - Robert Kent, playing in a reserve role due to a sore ankle, threw for 181 yards and the winning touchdown as Jackson State held on for a 14-9 win Saturday over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Kent entered the game with 2:28 left in the second quarter and immediately made his presence known. His third passing attempt was a 52-yard touchdown toss to Tim Manning with 56 seconds left, giving Jackson State (5-2) a 7-6 lead at the half.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-4) took a 6-0 lead after Tyrone Walker returned a blocked punt 11 yards for a touchdown with 2:37 left in the half, but the Golden Lions missed the extra point.

Lawrence Nolen's 1-yard touchdown with 4:12 left in the third quarter gave the Tigers a 14-6 lead.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which lost its third straight game, had 13 penalties and four turnovers, including a game-ending interception.

Millsaps 17, Sewanee 7

JACKSON - Casey Macke had a 1-yard touchdown run and Doug Garner threw a 12-yard pass to Jed Lumpkin for another score in Millsaps' 17-7 victory Saturday over Sewanee.

Millsaps (5-3, 2-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) scored 14 points in the fourth quarter but had just 163 yards of offense. Sewanee (5-4, 2-3) managed no better on offense with 197 total yards.

Lumpkins' touchdown with 2:19 remaining capped a 5-play 22-yard drive. Macke's score with 11:18 left gave Millsaps a 10-7 lead.

Sewanee scored on a 38-yard fumble recovery in the first quarter. Sewanee led 7-0 at the half.

Southern U. 49, Valley 0

SHREVEPORT, La. - Terrence Levy hit all 20 passes he attempted for 213 yards and ran for three TDs as Southern University demolished Mississippi Valley State 49-0 Saturday.

Carl Singleton had 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Southern (3-3, 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference), outgaining all MVSU rushers combined by more than double.

Brandon Dawson led MVSU (0-7, 0-4) with 51 yards on six carries. The Delta Devils finished 59 yards rushing as a team, and only 44 yards passing. Mississippi Valley State starting quarterback hit only two of 10 passes for 27 yards.

Anthony Fisher, Southern's third quarterback, hit both passes he threw for 73 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown to Devin Lewis. Lewis finished with 11 catches for 185 yards.

Miss. College 27, Austin College 7

SHERMAN, Texas - Derrick Caples rushed for 127 yards and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass as Mississippi College defeated Austin College on Saturday.

Mississippi College (5-3, 4-3 American Southwest) was shut out in the first quarter, then ran off 27 points in the second and third quarters.

Payton Perrett threw two TDs during Mississippi College's run, capitalizing on two Austin College fumbles.

Austin College (3-4, 3-3) allowed five sacks and had three turnovers in their loss.

Pikeville 30, Belhaven 21

JACKSON - Leonard Moore ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries as Pikeville rolled up 536 yards on offense in a 30-21 win Saturday against Belhaven.

Moore's touchdown came on a 30-yard run with 1:06 remaining to give Pikeville (3-5, 2-3 MSC) the 30-21 lead. Belhaven (3-5, 2-4) has a four-game losing streak.

Paul Duplessis scored two touchdowns for the Blazers, on runs of 9 and 18 yards.

Pikeville took the lead for good on a 24-yard field goal by Rafael Margez.

Pikeville quarterback Ken Jones completed 11-of-17 passes for 237 yards and a TD.

Other action

Cal-Poly-SLO defeated Alcorn State 21-12.
