THRASHER HAS NO ANSWER FOR STRINGER'S WINFIELD
By D.E. Wheeler
JACKSON Thrasher coach Cassie Farris knew what was coming. She knew that Jackie Winfield was going to score her share of points, but that knowledge was of no help.
Winfield scored 30 points, 13 during a big second quarter, to help the Stringer Lady Red Devils earn a 59-38 win Friday afternoon over the Lady Rebels in a first round Class 1A matchup at the State Tournament.
"What was the difference in the game? No. 33, Winfield, she's an excellent player," said Farris. "We tried a 2-3 (zone), we tried a trapping 2-3, and a 1-3-1.
"Then when we had to go man-to-man, she could drive. I've never seen one player do so much."
On the scoreboard, the competitive phase of the game was in the first quarter. With the help of seven points from Misty Lauderdale, including a shot from the arc with 12 seconds left in the period, the Lady Rebels (26-13) only trailed 13-9.
In the second quarter, with some careless cross-court passing by Thrasher, Stringer (25-3) went on a 12-0 run over an almost five minute span to take a 25-10 lead. After a free throw by Nina Allen for Thrasher, Winfield added seven of Stringer's next nine points as the Lady Devils took a 34-15 halftime lead.
"I think we were a little bit quicker than they were," Stringer coach Sam McDonald said. "We were able to get out in front and keep them off-balance."
Thrasher gave its faithful a little ray of hope the first part of the third quarter. With Keesha Norris scoring all six points, the Lady Rebels cut the lead to 38-24.
A Jennifer Pace basket with 2:06 left in the period cut it to 40-26, but that was as good as it got for the Lady Rebels.
"We cut it to 14 and had a little momentum our way," Farris said. "We missed a couple of free throws, made a couple of turnovers, then it went from 14 to 20 in about a minute."
Stringer did push the lead up to 46-27 by the end of the period, and five points by Winfield before she went to the bench in the fourth quarter push the score up to 52-27.
Lawanda Winfield added 12 for Stringer, which will face north No. 1 seed West Union Thursday at 1 p.m. Lauderdale led Thrasher with 21 points.
"We knew exactly could happen with Winfield. We knew about it and still couldn't stop it," Farris said. "This was still a positive experience.
"We worked hard to get here without a gym."
