WALNUT—The Walnut Invitational Tournament, which began Monday at Walnut High School resumes today at 4 p.m. The round-robin tournament field includes varsity girls and boys squads from Ashland, Ripley, Potts Camp and Walnut high schools.
Today's schedule is a follows:
(G)Ashland vs. Ripley, 4 p.m.
(B)Ashland vs. Ripley, 5:30 p.m.
(G)Potts Camp vs. Walnut, 7 p.m.
(B)Potts Camp vs. Walnut, 8:30 p.m.
The final round is slated for Saturday, Dec. 3 beginning at 3 p.m.
Monday, the Ripley Lady Tigers (4-1) began their quest to match their 2008 3-0 tournament record, as they opened with a 69-43 win over the Potts Camp Lady Cardinals (4-3). The Ripley Tigers followed with a 82-46 thumping of the Potts Camp Cardinals.
Walnut was to face Ashland in a pair of games, but because of the unusual early threat of winter weather, the games were canceled. According to Walnut officials the games will not be made up because of scheduling conflicts.
Jayla Chills led the Lady Tigers with 19 points. She scored 17 first-half points, including nine consecutive points in the first quarter to help open a 26-11 lead. Potts Camp got as close as 33-21 in the second quarter, before Chills added six more points and senior Latisha Evans scored all six of her points to open up a 44-29 halftime lead.
Senior post player Becca Ruckes added 12 points for the Lady Tigers. For Potts Camp, Tenesha Woods led with a game-high 22 points, while Zana Davis chipped in 14 points.
The Ripley Tigers (3-2) had four players in double figures, led by freshman Canaan Ratliff and his 16 points. Ratliff drained two 3-pointers on his way to eight second-quarter points. The Tigers led 41-23 at the break.
Malik Pearson, who scored 15 points, got the Tigers going in the first quarter with four buckets for eight points. Freshman Isaiah Howard and Isaac Bails added 10 points each.
Ashland swept the 2010 WI, while Potts Camp swept the tournament titles in 2009. The Ripley Lady Tigers won the girls’ championship in 2008.
