BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - Blue Mountain opened its 2019-20 season with a bang, crushing Southeastern Baptist 97-74.
The Toppers jumped out to a huge 26-4 lead and never looked back, with Brandon Williams (SO/Dyersburg, Tenn.) leading the way with 17 points, connecting on 5-of-10 from 3-point land.
Da'Juonta Ross (SR/Chattanooga, Tenn.) got in on the fun, getting 13 points of his own, including two dunks and seven rebounds.
Topper floor general Jonah Simpson (SR/Jackson, Miss.) included 12 points, as did Will Gardner (SO/Corinth, Miss.). Tyree Beason (SR/Memphis, Tenn.) chipped in 10 points for BMC also.
BMC would shoot 52 percent from the floor on the night, while the Chargers shot 41.
The Topper defense forced an astounding 31 Charger turnovers on the night, with Ross and Williams getting several together.
"I was very happy with how our guys got after it tonight," BMC head coach Jermael Bingham said. "It was high-energy, and we looked ready to play. For the most part, we shot the ball well and forced a lot of turnovers. We felt like if we could do that, and get out and run a little, we would be fine. It's still early, and we had the opportunity to let all our guys see the floor, so it was good to get a win on opening night. I'm very happy with how our students turned out and supported us also."
BMC returns to action Thursday at home against in-state school Rust College with a 7:30 p.m. tip.
