SOFTBALL: Pine Grove travels to Smithville for North semifinals

Senior shortstop Lesile Hopkins and the Pine Grove Lady Panther seek their first playoff series win over Smithville.

SMITHVILLE--Saturday, the Pine Grove Lady Panthers (17-9) will visit the Smithville Lady Seminoles in the Class 1A slow-pitch North semifinals. First pitch for Game One of the best-of-three series is set for noon at Smithville.

The Lady Seminoles, who have won back-to-back slow-pitch state titles, swept Blue Mountain  (23-2 and 13-0) on Tuesday. Pine Grove won their series over Myrtle 2-1. Brittany Gates belted a 2-out walk-off single in Game 3 for a dramatic 13-12 win.

Pine Grove, who missed the last two post-seasons, seeks their first North Half final.  They last appeared in the playoffs in 2010 where they met the Lady Seminoles in Round Two. Smithville won the series 2-1, 6-0, 3-13 and 10-0.

This season, the Lady Panthers won Div. 1-1A with a 9-1 record. Smithville  (18-12) was second in Div. 2-1A.
